  • What is IAPWS-97?
    IAPWS is an international non-profit association of national organizations concerned with the properties of water and steam, particularly thermo-physical properties and other aspects of high-temperature steam, water and aqueous mixtures that are relevant to thermal power cycles and other industrial applications (IAPWS, 2008). In 1995 IAPWS released the IAPWS-IF95 standard used for the general and scientific use. The scientific formulation is a rigorous fundamental equation derived from a large set of experimental data. Two years later, IAPWS approved a new formulation of the thermodynamic properties of water and steam for industrial use. This standard is called "Industrial Formulation 1997 for the Thermodynamic Properties of Water and Steam" abbreviated to "IAPWS Industrial Formulation 1997" (IAPWS-IF97). The industrial formulation is a numerical approximation of the scientific formulation. The approximation is further facilitated by breaking up the fluid envelope into several distinct regions. Most of these regions provide properties as explicit functions of temperature and pressure allowing direct calculations of all derived properties. Thus, for most property values the industrial formulation is computationally faster than the scientific formulation.
  • Why to use a steam property calculator?

    Your MS Office user interface language and your Locale ( Regional settings ) do not match. You may either install the corresponding Multilingual User Interface Pack for your version of MS Office or change the locale (from Control Panel/Regional Settings) to have them match.

Once the thermo-physical properties are inserted directly into Excel, or imported from different process simulator software programs into Excel format, any functions exposed by the add-in file are available for use.

    Quality is a measure of the quantity of steam which can be found in the condensate phase. It assumes values between 0 and 1; 0 contains only condensate (liquid phase), 1 contains only steam (vapor) phase.

    On the user interface there is a bottom correspondent to the ”Find Unit of Measure” which allows to search a unit of measure within a scpecifci category or in all categories. The user has only to type the full name of the unit or a part of it in order to find the desired unit of measure.
  • How can the UMConvert Function be acessed?
    The path you have to follow in order to access UMConvert function is: Microsoft Excel/Insert /Functions /UMConvert.
  • Is there any difference between the small and capital letters used in the formulas?
    The units of measure abbreviations used in spreadsheet formula exposed by the UM Converter add-in are case sensitive (e.g. =UMConvert($A$1,"m","km") returns correct values menawhile =UMConvert($A$1,"M","km" returns an error #Value if the parameters values are invalid).
